Mac is my first Brittany. He is a wonderful hunting partner and loyal companion. He earned his AKC Master Hunter at 20 months of age (despite the shortcomings of his handler).
The picture at right was taken at 16 months. His coat looks coarse because he is wet. He decided "come" was not a command to obey and continued to cross a pond that had iced over. He fell through the ice into the frigid water. Thankfully he made it out without me having to go in after him. But I was prepared to.
A number of folks were instrumental in this Master Hunter achievement. Mac and I wish to express our appreciation to them all. First is Buster, the dog that convinced me a Brittany is one of life's essential needs. Buster is the best pheasant dog I have ever hunted behind. He is owned by my good friends Ray and Kim McVeigh. Buster was Mac's primary training partner and tolerated a lot of nonsense. A special thank you goes out to Ray for all the time we spent together with our boys.
Mac and Buster are half-brothers, out of the same dam, Melody Le An McRough. Melody was owned by Craig Shaw of Shaw's Grouse Havens Kennels. Craig Shaw breeds Brittanys and professionally trains pointing dogs. I highly recommend Craig and Deb Shaw's line of dogs. They have great temperaments, first and foremost, making great companions and hunting partners.
